Placemaking: The Purple Flag Project

A PRECINCT PROJECT TO ENSURE SAFETY, URBAN BEAUTY & ACCESSIBILITY.

Step into the vibrant tapestry of Newtown and its main thoroughfare King Street has long been a melting pot of cultures and economies, a pulsating hub that embraces the weird and wonderful.

In the wake of the 2014 Kings Cross lockouts, King Street experienced a dramatic surge in late-night revelry. Yet, this sudden boom caught our resources off guard. Through the concerted efforts of Liquor Accords, business owners, and councils, we navigated the challenges to ensure safety without compromising our bustling 6 am to 5 pm charm.

Newtown, a true 24-hour economy, continues to thrive at all hours, despite safety concerns, necessary upgrades, and business inconsistencies. The upkeep comes to the heart of the community and how its people work together.

But like any vibrant canvas, King Street isn't without its smudges. Late-night safety concerns loom large, with dimly lit streets, limited late-night public transport options, instances of anti-social behaviour, and alcohol-related incidents. With the limited late-night transport options, ride-share platforms began to boom, however, there is yet to be any introduction of platforms, nor safe spaces for these to operate. Due to the lack of diversity in offering late night, and alcohol fuelling the economy, we do have cleanliness issues along King Street; glass bottles, rubbish, food outlet litter.

Yet amidst these challenges, King Street gleams with the promise of greatness. Its unique identity, cultural richness, and diverse offerings throughout the day and night mirror the attributes of a Purple Flag accredited High Street. With well-managed licensed venues and the collaborative efforts of the New South Wales Police, there is community led hunger to build King Street into the Australian go-to destination for our residents and tourists and to promote a vibrant after-dark experience.

Though accreditation may seem distant, the stakeholders—including the Newtown Enmore Business Community, Inner West Council, City of Sydney, local businesses, and residents—are tirelessly committed to shaping King Street's future. Our aim is to align with the standards of accredited spaces like YCK, Parramatta CBD, Haldon Street, Lakemba.

We will continue to march forward, adjusting, evolving, and seeking the resources needed to turn our vision into reality.
